Title significance:
Dr Tariq Rehman is an eminent
writer in the field of Pakistani literature. He has written several short
stories having divergent morals and code of life. The title of this story is
self-explanatory and has direct link with the “myth of Sisyphus”. The cunning
and evil character in Greek mythology who was punished for his evil plots and
dis-obedience. He was awarded with the endless labor in a way that he has to
roll the stone up on the cliff and when the stone reaches the cliff, it rolls
back due to its weight.
This was endless labor
and Mr. Tariq has dexterously used this title burden of Sisyphus for the
protagonist “Zebi” whose story reflects the myth of Sisyphus.
Brief Summary of “The burden of Sisyphus”:
The short story
revolves around a protagonist" Zebi"
who falls in love With a " dagger " and he left no stone unturned in
purchasing that dagger but his obsession for dagger went fruitless as the price
of dagger kept increasing with the passage of time. At last, he gave up and life
passes swiftly unhampered.
After few years he got
married and blessed with a child. After
several years, his son also liked the dagger of the same kind with whom his
father fell in love with. But his father scolds him and leave the shop by saying". No, time and money for such childish stuff".
