POWER AND IDEOLOGY
It was a structuralist theory that overtake the Marxist theory.
According to their point of view:
"Identity is created by people".
Ideology is built by ourselves and other voyers.
Ideologies are developed with the passage of time by experience.
Van Dijk:
Important figure provided the definition of ideology. He said
" Ideology can be of everything".
Power:
First concept was given by Niccolo Machiavelli in 16th century.
Niccolo defined power in these words: "power is strategic. When you think strategically and decentralize rights. It is known as power organization"
Think Strategically + Individual decentralize Rights + Organization democracy
Thomas Hobbes:
Thomas Hobbes in 17th century said that one should support sovereignty of state.
When sovereignty and rights of people both compile together it is called as power.
Sovereignty of state+ Rights of people
Are supported by people.
Hobbes believe in equality of all man in a civil society. State allows everything. People are free to do anything they want to . People are free to anything that are not forbidden by law.
State is an entity ruled by the sovereignty and people live their lives in peaceful society.
For example: UK has monarch system and democracy.
Hobbes said: " In case of abuse of power people have to accept it as a price of peace".
So sovereign control civil, society, military, judiciary and religion.
After World War 2 power and it's study focused on Elite class.
C.W Mills:
C.W Mills said in 1956 says that ruling elite are always powerful. Nowadays, if one talks about power, individuals are fighting with each other.
For them, power is a set of social pressure and disgusting feature of ideology.
Ideology:
It meant many things in history, but one thing is always common. It refers to social Norms, and processes by which you make your world around you.
Fair Clough:
Fair Clough in 1989 said that:
"Ideology and power are of two types:
1) The ideology of USA and Britain after World War 2.
2) Marxist Theory
Difference:
The ideology of USA after World War 2 believes that, it is any social policy derives from a social theory in a conscious way.
Marxist on the other hand says, "Ideology is composed of ideas, which arise as a set of Material Interests in struggle of our power.
Whorf:
Whorf says "Language is not a voicing instrument but it also shapes your ideas"
